A Conscience That HoldsPsalm 15:4

The Six Extra Miles

This message is for what your manager said about a customer, and your nod, and the drive home

Rilla Sizemore started taking the long way home in March, and it took her until June to admit to herself that she was doing it on purpose.

She ran the register at a small grocery in a mountain town, the kind with two aisles and a meat counter and a bell on the door. She had been there nine years. She was good at it. She knew what everybody bought.

Dean managed the place. Dean was not a cruel man. He coached his boy's ball team and he stayed late on inventory nights and he had let Rilla go home three separate times without docking her when her mother was bad. But it was 4:40 on a Thursday and he was tired, and after Mr. Combs went out the door with his sack, Dean said the thing.

It was not the worst thing anybody ever said about anybody. It was just small. It was about a man who was not standing there, a man in his eighties who paid out of a coin purse and counted wrong and took his time about it, and Dean said it the way people say those things, half under his breath, expecting the little laugh back.

And Rilla nodded.

That was all. She did not laugh. She did not agree out loud. She nodded, the way your head nods when you have been standing eight hours and you want a thing to be over, and then she straightened the gum rack.

She got in her truck at six. And instead of turning right at the light, which is four miles of blacktop and a gravel cut and her own mailbox, she turned left, which is ten.

She did that for thirteen weeks.

She never once said the word penance to herself. She would have been embarrassed by it. She just could not go straight home yet. Six extra miles is about nine minutes, and nine minutes was what it took to be a person her kids could look at.

Now here is what happened in June, and it is smaller than you are expecting.

Mr. Combs came in on a Tuesday. Rilla called him by his name, which she had always done. Then she came around the end of the counter and carried his sack out to his truck, which she had not always done. She asked him how Wanda was, and she used Wanda's name, and she stood in the parking lot in the heat for eleven minutes while he told her.

She said nothing to Dean. Not that day, not any day. Nothing at that store changed by one inch.

And at six o'clock she got in her truck, and she was already at her own mailbox before she noticed she had never decided which way to come.

The Six Extra Miles

The one who keeps it when it costs

Psalm 15 opens with a question about who gets to live close to God, and then it does something unusual. It does not answer with achievements. It answers with a short list of ordinary habits, and one of them is this.

He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.Psalm 15:4

A person who gave their word, watched it turn expensive, and did not go back and adjust it. That is the whole mark. It is not a stand taken in a room. It is not a speech. It is somebody whose inside and outside are the same thing on a day when it would have been cheaper for them not to be.

And read the front of that same verse, because it is the half nobody quotes.

He honoureth them that fear the LORD.Psalm 15:4

Honoring. The psalm's picture of an intact conscience is a person who lifts other people up, not a person who wins.

You are one of those people, and you have been one the whole time. I am not being nice to you. Scripture puts honoring and keeping-at-a-cost side by side as the marks of a heart at home with God, and the Holy Spirit is the One who put both of them in you.

Because look at what your nod actually did. It sent you six miles out of your way, twice a week, for thirteen weeks.

A dead conscience does not cost anybody gas money. The word says God writes His law on the hearts of His people, and the Spirit is the one doing the writing, and what you have been calling your shame is the ink still being wet.

Now let me say the thing you most need said, and I want you to sit with it.

Your nod was not a signature. You did not sell anything. You were eight hours in on a Thursday, standing in a room with a man who has been decent to you, and your head moved. Scripture never once treats a tired body's flinch as a treaty, and the Spirit who was standing right there with you did not record it as one.

What you have been carrying is not guilt for a crime. It is grief over a gap. There is a version of you that would have said something warm about that old man right then, and she did not get there in time, and you have been driving around the county with her ever since.

Hear me. You are not required to win a room in order to have a conscience. Yours is intact, it is God's, and nobody in that store is holding the pen. The written word gives the mark as honoring and keeping, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you for a confrontation He never assigned you.

Because here is the thing about a small unkindness. It is not repaired where it happened. It is repaired where the person is.

Dean did not need to be corrected in front of the gum rack for Rilla's conscience to come back. Mr. Combs needed his name used and his sack carried and eleven minutes in a hot parking lot while he talked about Wanda. That is the honoring in the verse. It costs something, which is what makes it real, and it costs it to nobody but the one paying.

What is being handed back to you today is not a fight. It is your own hands. The word says honor them, and the Spirit will show you exactly who and exactly when, and He is not vague about it when a person is actually listening.

The breakthrough

You have been treating those six extra miles as a sentence you are serving.

They were never a sentence. They were a conscience doing exactly what a living conscience does, and today it stops being your punishment and starts being your evidence.

Your conscience belongs to God, and it is in working order right now. Scripture puts the mark on the honoring and the keeping, and the Holy Spirit who is writing that law on your heart is not building a case against you with the ink.

You do not owe that room a scene. You owe an old man in a coin purse eleven minutes.

Declare this over yourself

You speak this as one who is in Christ, and the authority is His, delegated to you, never leverage of your own over anybody else. Hold it under "not my will, but Thine": He may answer in His own way and in His own timing, and His written word stays settled under your feet.

  1. Six extra miles of blacktop, you have had my drive home since March, and you were never a penance I owed anybody. The word of God marks His own as the ones who swear to their own hurt and change not, so in the name of Jesus I take you as evidence and not as a sentence.
  2. Verdict I handed down on myself in that truck, that a woman who nods is a woman with nothing in her, get off me in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, a dead conscience does not cost anybody gas money, and You are the One who has been writing on my heart the whole thirteen weeks.
  3. Lord Jesus, my conscience is Yours and there is no other hand on the pen. Your word says the one who abides with You honors people, so I am carrying somebody's sack out to their truck this week and standing in the heat while they talk.
