Room at the Table1 Peter 3:8

I Can Still Do Her Voice

This message is for what your aunt said at the funeral, four years ago, that you have never put down

She does the impression at her own kitchen table, four years on, and she does it well.

She has the pause right. She has the little lift on the second word, the exact one, the one that makes it sound reasonable and is not. She has the way the hand went out, palm up, as though she were being generous. Four years of practice will do that.

It was said in the corridor outside the room where they had all just come from her father's service, with the sandwiches under cling film on a trestle table and nobody quite knowing where to stand. Her aunt said the sentence. Fourteen words. And then somebody needed help with the urn and it was over, and nobody else in that corridor even heard it.

Cheryl heard it. Cheryl has been hearing it since.

She has argued with those fourteen words in the shower. She has answered them at traffic lights, out loud, with a much better reply than the one she gave. She has taken the sentence out and turned it over so many times that the corners have gone soft, and she can tell you where she was standing, and what the carpet looked like, and that the tea urn was making that noise.

And here is the thing she has never let herself look at: she is good at it now. It has become a piece she performs. There is a version of the funeral she tells where the sentence is the punchline, and it lands every time, and she gets something out of the landing.

Then a Sunday in spring, her own daughter at the table, twenty three, half listening while she scrolled. Cheryl did the voice. The daughter laughed, properly, and then looked up and said, without any weight on it at all: what did she mean by it, though?

Cheryl opened her mouth to answer.

And she found she did not know. Four years. She could do the woman's voice, perfectly, and she had never once wondered what was going on inside her when she said it.

You have fourteen words of your own. Different corridor, different day. Sit with me a while, and I promise you this now: nobody here is going to tell you that she was right.

I Can Still Do Her Voice

What you are allowed to keep

Let me say the low part first, and let me say it in the right order, because the order matters.

That sentence was not nothing. It was said at the worst hour of your life, by somebody who should have been holding you up, and it went in deep because you were open. That is not you being sensitive. That is what an open person is: open. You were standing in a corridor with your father twenty feet away in a box, and you had no skin on.

So nothing in this message asks you to decide it was fine. It was not fine.

But four years is a long time to keep something in your mouth, and I think you have noticed what it has done to your teeth. It has made you sharper. It has made you funnier. And it has quietly rearranged which rooms you will walk into, and you have started giving that a respectable name, like standards, or like knowing my own worth.

Now hear what Peter writes to people who were genuinely being treated badly, which is the only reason this verse can be trusted.

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.1 Peter 3:8

Having compassion one of another. The word underneath it means to suffer alongside, to feel the thing with the person. And Peter is not writing to people who were imagining their trouble, which is exactly why he can ask this without insulting anybody. He never asks them to decide they were not wronged. He asks them for something that costs more than being right and takes less energy than being angry.

So take this over you now, before we go a step further. You are not being asked to say she was right, and you never will be, not on this site and not by me. Scripture never once asks a wronged person to rewrite what happened, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line is not in the business of talking anybody out of their own memory.

Here is what is actually available, and it is a great deal better than a verdict. You are free to hold what you believe at full weight, all of it, without one ounce shaved off, and still leave the door unlatched. Those two things have never been in competition, whatever the last four years have taught you. That is a settled reality in the written word, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes it possible in an actual family with actual history in it.

Because here is what the impression is costing you, and it is not what you think. It is not costing you your aunt. She is fine. She has probably forgotten. It is costing you the four minutes it takes every time, and the small hot feeling afterward, and the fact that you have to keep her voice alive in your own mouth in order to do it. She is not the one carrying her sentence around. You are.

And there is that question your daughter asked, and it is a better question than any of your traffic light replies. What did she mean by it. Not what did it do to you, which you know down to the carpet, but what was happening inside a woman on the worst day of her family's life, that made that come out of her.

You do not have to answer it. You may never know. But you are allowed to wonder, and wondering is not agreeing, and it is not weakness, and it costs you nothing you were keeping. That much room is written into the word Peter used, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it fit inside an actual person.

That is the whole of what Helwys did, in a harder version. He asked liberty for the people he was certain were wrong, and he never once said they were right. He held his conviction with his whole weight and left the door off the latch at the same time, and history has never been able to decide whether that was strength or mercy, because it is both and they were never two things.

You have room in you for both, right now, and it is not a technique. Paul told a church to live peaceably with all men as much as lieth in you, Romans 12:18, and as much as lieth in you is the kindest clause in the letter: it puts a limit on what is yours, and the Holy Spirit takes the part that is not.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a phone call.

Nobody is sending you to make peace with anybody. You do not have to ring her, forgive her out loud, invite her, explain yourself, or be in a room with her at Christmas. This message does not know your family and will not spend your Christmas for you.

What is being handed back is smaller and it is yours: the four minutes, the hot feeling afterward, and the space in your mouth that her voice has been renting for four years. You can put it down without her ever knowing you picked it up.

Your conviction stays exactly where it is, at full weight, with nothing shaved off. The door is a separate thing from the conviction, and it always was.

We flip the switch. He sends the current. What He does with that family in the years to come is His, in His own way, and none of it is being promised to you here.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are sitting. What you hold is yours in Christ, given to you, so the authority in these words is delegated and real rather than something you are working up. The written word is the ground under them, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes room in a real family, and whatever He does with those people is His to decide, in His own way. Speak to the sentence first, then evict the appetite for the performance, then turn and speak to Him.

  1. Fourteen words in a corridor, you are not living in my mouth any more, and you never paid rent. Scripture tells the genuinely wronged to have compassion one of another, and it never once told them to say they were not wronged. You may keep the corridor, and I am keeping the four minutes.
  2. Taste I have got for doing her voice at my own table, get off me, in the name of Jesus. As much as lieth in me is the measure God set, and He never asked me for the part that lies in somebody else. What is mine is mine to put down, and putting it down is exactly what I am doing.
  3. Lord, I can hold what I believe with my whole weight and still leave the door unlatched, because You never made those two things fight. Live peaceably with all men, as much as lieth in me, and the rest of it is Yours. I am sitting through the next one without correcting anybody, and I am letting it end unfinished.
