The spine let go in his aunt's front room in October, and because he is the one in that family who fixes things, the Bible came home with him.
He set it on the bench out in the shop under the drop light, next to a coffee can full of clamps, and looked at it the way a man looks at a job he has not priced yet. Front board hanging on by an inch of cloth. Somebody in 1888 had paid real money for it and nobody since had spent a dime keeping it together.
Saturday morning he warmed hide glue on the hot plate and worked the boards loose, and the flyleaf came away in his hand.
Four generations of names on it.
His great grandfather at the top in brown ink gone the color of weak tea. A wedding, two burials, a fire. Then his grandfather's hand under that, heavier, pressing through the paper. Then his father's in ballpoint, and there was his own name in his father's writing, February, the year spelled out longways.
He stood there with the heater ticking and read down the page twice.
Not one line of it was his.
Fifty nine years old, raised in that building, and he could still sing forty hymns without the book in front of him. His handwriting was nowhere in that Bible, and it had never once crossed his mind that he was allowed to put it there.
He went to set the flyleaf down, and something slid out of the block of pages from about where Joshua runs into Judges.
A feed store receipt, folded in fourths, gone soft as cloth. Nineteen fifty four. And on the back of it, in pencil, in his grandfather's heavy hand:
March the 7. I have decided this day for myself and not for anybody else. Roy.
He read it standing up.
Roy had been the deacon. Roy unlocked that building for thirty one years and got there before the stove was lit, and Roy had his name in ink in the front of that Bible with his own father's name in the line above it. And in March of 1954 he had gone off by himself with a pencil and a feed store receipt and settled it, like a man who had never once assumed it came with the house.
Nobody wrote it in for Roy either.
He read it out loud. He had not planned to. And when he got to the end of Roy's sentence his mouth kept going, and what came out next was his own, and it was plain, and it was clumsy, and there was not a soul in that shop to hear it.
You know that flyleaf.
Maybe it is not a book. Maybe it is a row you sat in for twenty years, or a grace you can say from memory, or a whole vocabulary you were handed before you were old enough to ask for it. You can do all of it from memory. And you still cannot tell anybody whether any of it is yours, and you have been quietly checking yourself for years, looking for the evidence one way or the other.

He was a hundred and ten years old, and the last thing he did was hand out a choice
Joshua got them all the way in. The crossing, the walls, the war, the ground surveyed and divided out tribe by tribe. He was a hundred and ten years old, and everything he had been sent to do was done.
And what he says to them at Shechem, at the very end, is this.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15
Look at what he had told them two verses earlier. In God's own words, they were eating out of vineyards they had not planted and living in cities they had not built, and it was not theft and it was not an accident. God gave it to them on purpose.
So the inheritance was real, God handed it over Himself, and Joshua never once suggested the generation receiving it had come by it cheaply.
And then he put a choosing in front of them anyway.
You are not standing on something counterfeit, and the choosing in front of you today is not an audit of what you were handed. Joshua 24:13 has God saying plainly that He gave them a land they did not labor for, and it is the Holy Spirit, the same one who has been at work in your family longer than you have been alive, who is turning your face toward the choosing now. What was given was given. What is being offered is more.
That is the whole shape of it, and it is gentler than most of us were told.
God does not hand faith down a row the way an usher hands down a plate. He deals with people one at a time, by name, and He always has. Not because the row is worthless. Because a person is not a crowd.
You have been dealt with by name, and nobody in your family line was ever asked to answer for you. Isaiah 43:1 says He has called you by your name and that you are His, and the Spirit of God is the one who carries that word off the page and into a man standing in a cold shop at eight in the morning. You were never a line item under somebody else's account.
What the four names in the front are actually for
The names in the front of that book are testimony. They are not a lease.
They are a record of people God met, one at a time, over four generations, each of them alone at some point with the thing settled between themselves and Him. They are not a bill somebody left you, and they are not evidence that everybody in that line got something you were skipped over for.
Paul writes to a young man with exactly your problem. Timothy has a grandmother, Lois, and a mother, Eunice, and Paul lays all three names out in one sentence, which is the only place in Scripture where somebody's family flyleaf gets read out loud. Then he says the thing.
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.2 Timothy 1:5
He does not say Timothy has a copy of it, or that he is borrowing theirs until his own comes in. He says it dwells, the verb does not weaken as it comes down the list, and the last name on that list is Timothy's own.
You are not carrying a photocopy of somebody else's believing, you are carrying the thing itself, and it dwells in you. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and notice who is doing the testifying in that sentence. It is not your feelings. It is not your memory of a Tuesday when you were nine. It is Him.
Now the plain thing about the auditing, because it is what you have been doing and it has been costing you.
You go back through your own life looking for the receipt. Was that real. Did I mean it. Would I have believed any of it if I had been born four counties over. I am not going to call that ledger weakness. Anybody handed a whole faith before they could read it would eventually want to know whose it was.
But there is no receipt to find, and there was never supposed to be one, because a gift does not come with an audit trail.
You have a gift in your hands and not a claim you are required to defend. Ephesians 2:8 says it is by grace through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, so the very believing you have been examining for authenticity was itself handed to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it there. The examining was never the way in. The open hand is.
So here is what is on the bench, and it is not the thing you thought you were reaching for.
Not proof. Not a memory that finally holds up under questioning. A choosing, open today, in your own hands, with the whole inheritance still standing behind you unchallenged and unaccused.
You are able to settle this today, and the day is open right now. Hebrews 3:15 says To day if ye will hear his voice, and the reason that word has not gone stale is that the Holy Spirit is the one speaking it, in the present tense, to you, in whatever room you are sitting in.
Roy did not get anything in 1954 that you are being kept out of. He got a pencil, a feed store receipt and a minute alone, and he did with them what a man does.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's and delegated, the Spirit who bears witness is the one carrying it, and what comes of the sentence you say tonight is His to decide.
- Four names in the front of a book, you are testimony and you were never a lease, and I am done reading you as a verdict on me. Joshua stood at Shechem with the whole inheritance already delivered and still put a choosing into a man's own hands. You are the record of people God met one at a time, and I am one at a time too.
- Suspicion that I am only a photocopy of somebody else's believing, get out of this house in the name of Jesus, and take that ledger with you. Paul looked at a young man with two generations behind him and said the faith dwells in thee also, and the Spirit Himself bears witness with my spirit. What is in me is not a hand me down, it is a dwelling.
- Lord, You handed it to me Yourself and You never sent it along the row. Your word says it is the gift of God and not of myself, so there is no receipt in here for me to go hunting. I am saying one plain sentence of it out loud tonight, in my own words, and the only ears in the room are Yours.
