A Conscience That HoldsJob 27:6

Somebody Else Wrote the First Paragraph

This message is for the reference you were asked to write for somebody you could not honestly recommend

The email came in at 4:51 on a Wednesday, which is a time of day chosen by people who do not want a conversation.

Hollis, needs to go out Friday. I've started it for you, just make it your own.

Underneath that, in a slightly different font because it was pasted in from somewhere, sat the first paragraph. Warm, well built, three sentences, and at the front of the second one a phrase Hollis has read forty times since Wednesday.

Consistently exceeds expectations.

He is fifty-two years old. He has run that floor for nine years. And Ray, whose name is on the letter, is a decent man with a wife and two kids and a good laugh, and Ray does not consistently exceed expectations, and everybody on that floor including Ray knows it.

Nothing here is a scandal. Nobody is hurt, nobody is in danger, nothing has been hidden. It is one sentence about a man's work that is not true, on a page that will carry Hollis's name under it in eleven point type, and his title under that.

He has left it open on the screen since Wednesday.

He has typed and deleted a softer version four times. He has tried moving the phrase to the middle of a longer sentence where it might get less oxygen. Twice he has nearly hit send and gone home to eat dinner like a normal man.

Because here is what makes his stomach turn over, and it is not the sentence.

It is that his name goes at the bottom, and nobody upstairs thinks that means anything. To them the bottom of that page is a formality, a place where a signature block lives, the same way a door has a hinge. They have already written the words. All that is left for Hollis to supply is the one thing on the page that is actually his.

Thursday night he is at the kitchen table with the laptop shut and the house asleep upstairs, and the thing he keeps turning over is not what do I write.

It is: when did somebody else start holding my pen, and how long has it been going on.

There is a Friday somewhere in your own week.

Maybe not a letter. A form. A sign off. A number you are being asked to round in a direction it does not go. A sentence someone drafted for you in a slightly different font, and a kind note on the top of it saying make it your own.

And you have been sitting in front of it longer than the thing deserves, and you have started to feel small about that, as if the delay itself were a character flaw.

It is not. Put that down right now.

Somebody Else Wrote the First Paragraph

The one thing on the page that is yours

There is a man sitting in a heap of ashes who has lost every single thing, and three friends have been sitting with him for a week working on him.

They are not monsters. They want the world to make sense. All he has to do is agree with their sentence about himself, one line that is not true, and the whole room will calm down and everybody can go home. He is exhausted and grieving and he has nothing left to argue with.

And this is what comes out of him.

My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.Job 27:6

Look at what he is not doing. He is not claiming he never sinned. He is not blowing anything up, not walking out of the ash heap, not going to war with those three men. He stays exactly where he is, in the same clothes, in the same ruined yard.

He simply will not sign their sentence.

Hold fast is a grip word. It is what you do with a rope in weather. And my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live is a man doing the arithmetic on the rest of his nights and deciding what he is willing to lie down with.

So hear this in the kitchen with the laptop shut. You are not a formality. Your conscience is not a signature block, and the bottom of that page is not a hinge. God gave you a conscience the way He gave you a spine, and Scripture puts a man in an ash heap holding on to his with both hands and calls it righteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the reason that thing in your stomach has not gone quiet since Wednesday.

Now hear what that turning stomach actually is, because you have been treating it as a nuisance.

It is not anxiety. It is not you being difficult. There is a witness inside you that God installed and that He Himself is not silent in. Four days of an open screen is not weakness of character. That is a conscience doing precisely the work it was put in you to do, and the written word says God is the one at work in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure, and the Holy Spirit does not go quiet just because it is nearly the weekend.

There was a man in 1612 who sent a book to a king, and who wrote his own name and his own address in the front of it, in his own hand, so that nobody could pretend the words had arrived from somewhere else. He knew exactly what that would cost him and he wrote it anyway. A name, written by the person it belongs to, at the front where it can be seen.

Now let me be extremely plain about what this message is not doing, because a message like this one goes wrong in exactly one direction.

I am not telling you what to write. I would not dare. I do not know your floor, your director, or what is riding on Friday in your house, and anybody who tells a stranger what to do in a room they have never stood in is playing with somebody else's life. Nothing here tells you to confront a soul, to walk out of a building, to report anybody, or to make Friday into a war. Job did none of those things.

And if you have gone quiet in that room before, more than once, for years, that is not a verdict on you and I will not let it be treated as one. A person who stayed quiet is not a coward. The pressure was real and the cost was real and God has never once weighed you against somebody who was not standing where you were standing.

What is yours is the pen. That is the whole of it.

Your conscience belongs to God, and it is on loan to nobody. Not to a director, not to a deadline, not to the tone of a Wednesday email. Scripture says every one of us gives account of himself, singular, in his own name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that fact awake in you all week instead of letting you sleep through it.

You are not late. You are deciding. There is a difference and heaven knows the difference.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it happens at your own kitchen table.

Somebody else wrote the first paragraph. Fine. That happens, and it will happen again. But nobody on this earth writes the last line, because the last line is your name, and your name is not a hinge.

Take the pen back. Not the argument, not the confrontation, not the resignation. The pen. Whatever ends up going out on Friday, you are the one who puts it there, in front of God, with your eyes open, and not because a Wednesday email pasted it in for you.

Your conscience belongs to God and no one else gets to hold it. That is not my opinion about workplaces; that is a man in an ash heap saying he will not let go of his integrity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding your grip steady on it since 4:51 on Wednesday. Whatever Friday costs, He is not somewhere else while you are paying it.

And I am not promising you Friday goes well. I am telling you whose hand the pen is in.

Declare this over yourself

Say them at the table with the paper folded in front of you. This standing is not your nerve: in Christ it belongs to you, and it is spoken under His will and never over it, and the outcome is His and never mine to hand out.

  1. Paragraph I did not write, you do not get to arrive already finished and wear my name like a hinge on a door. Scripture says a man in an ash heap held his integrity fast and would not let it go, and whatever goes out over my name, I am the one who puts it there.
  2. Fear of what it costs me if I am the one who slows this down, in the name of Jesus you are letting go of my hand, and you are not writing another line of my life in a font that is not mine. My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live, and I would rather carry Friday than carry that.
  3. God, my conscience is Yours and it is on loan to nobody, not to a deadline and not to a tone in an email. You put a witness in me and You have not been silent in it all week, so tonight I write the true sentence in my own hand, on my own paper, and I decide in front of You and not in front of the clock.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
