A Conscience That HoldsProverbs 4:23

The Half Second After You Laughed

This message is for the joke the whole table laughed at, including you, about somebody not in the room

The joke was not even a good one.

Four of them at the corner table in the break room, twenty-two minutes into a thirty minute lunch, and somebody did the voice. Everybody knew whose voice it was. Ray from shipping, who is slow on his feet and slower on the phone and who was not in the room, because Ray takes his lunch at eleven and everybody knows that too.

Angie Prewitt laughed.

Half a second late, but she laughed, and she heard herself do it the way you hear your own voice on a recording and do not care for it. The table moved on. Somebody had a thing about their gutters. Twenty-two minutes became thirty and the buzzer went and they all got up.

That was Tuesday.

It came back at eleven that night, out of nowhere, with the house dark and the dishwasher running. Not a thought. A physical thing, low down, like a door left open somewhere in the building.

She told herself it was nothing. It was nothing. Nobody was hurt. Ray never heard it, and never will, and if he had he would probably have laughed too, and there is no version of the world in which four people at a lunch table is a moral emergency.

She told herself that on Wednesday as well.

Thursday afternoon she came through the freight bay with a box on her hip and her badge in her teeth, and there was Ray at the roll-up door, both arms full, and he stuck out a boot and hooked the door open for her and stood there holding it with his shoulder while she went through.

"There you go, Ang," he said.

She got to her car at ten past four and sat there with the key in her hand and did not start it.

And then a sentence came up out of somewhere she had not been for thirty years. Her grandmother's kitchen, a card table, a memory verse for the summer, eight years old and bored out of her mind and mad about it.

Keep thy heart with all diligence.

She had not thought about that verse since Carter was president. It arrived whole, in her grandmother's voice, in a Toyota in a gravel lot on a Thursday.

Angie put her head back against the seat and said one word out loud in her own car, and the word was "Ray."

Just his name. Nothing else. His name said out loud by somebody, in a room where nobody was doing a voice.

The next Tuesday it started again. Same corner, same table, same twenty-two minute mark, and somebody wound up for it.

Angie looked at her sandwich.

That was all. She did not say anything. She did not make a speech or a face or a point. She just did not laugh, and the joke went out into the room and landed about a foot shorter than usual, and the table moved on to gutters, and not one person at that table noticed a single thing had happened.

She noticed.

She went back to the floor at half past twelve with her heart still her own, and nobody on earth knew it but her and God.

The Half Second After You Laughed

The watchman is not asleep

Here is the verse her grandmother made her learn at a card table, and it is one of the shortest job descriptions in Scripture.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.Proverbs 4:23

Keep. Not seal. Not sterilize. Not make sure nothing ever comes near it. Keep is what you do with a city and a wall and a man on the gate at night, and nobody has ever asked a watchman to arrange for the road to stay empty. His whole job is to be awake when something comes up it.

Which reframes what happened to you at eleven at night.

That ache was not the evidence against you. That was the watchman calling out. A conscience that hurts is a conscience that is working, and the thing you have been treating as proof of rot is actually proof of life, because a dead one does not ache and a bought one does not wake you up.

You are not a hypocrite for the half second. You are a person with a live conscience and a face that moves faster than it does. I am not softening this to be pleasant. The written word says out of the heart are the issues of life, which is why God posted a guard there and not somewhere else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who woke you in a dark kitchen with a verse you learned at eight.

Now notice the actual size of the pressure, because you have been ashamed of yourself over a scale you never measured.

It was not your job. It was not your safety. It was not a room where anybody would have been harmed by your silence. It was four people, a corner table, and three seconds of being slightly outside the joke. That is what it cost, and that is the price your face paid before your convictions had their coat on.

A laugh is a reflex. Reflexes are faster than convictions and always have been, and the half second afterward is the part of that moment that was actually you.

The verdict you passed on yourself at eleven at night has no right to stay in you. Scripture says the accuser of the brethren accuses day and night, and the Spirit does not do His work that way. Conviction hands you a door. Condemnation hands you a mirror and leaves.

Here is what the verse is not asking of you.

It is not asking you to go back and correct that table. Nothing in this puts a speech in your mouth or a phone call in your hand. You do not owe four people at lunch an account of your conscience, and this was never about them.

It is about one heart. The verse names exactly one, and it is yours, and it is the only one in that room you were ever given the keys to.

You have a guard on that gate, and God set him there Himself. The written word says He keeps the feet of His saints, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a thing to your remembrance in a parking lot thirty years after you learned it, which is not a memory trick. That is a Keeper doing His work in a person who thought she was on her own.

So the keeping is not a matter of your nerve. It is a matter of who is on the wall with you.

This is yours: a heart that answers to God, and not one other person in that break room holds the pen on it. Scripture says every one of us shall give account of himself to God, and the Holy Spirit does that work inside a person and has never once delegated it to a lunch table. It cuts both ways and mostly cuts kindly: nobody there is your judge, and nobody there is your conscience either.

The breakthrough

You have been asking the wrong question about Tuesday.

The question is not whether you laughed. You did, and it was a reflex, and heaven is not surprised by a reflex.

The question is who has the pen. Because there is a version of you that gets slowly written by the room you are standing in, one small laugh at a time, and there is a version that stays yours because Somebody keeps it. And the pen is not passed by a big betrayal. It is passed in half seconds.

It is already settled: your conscience belongs to God and it is not on loan to anybody. The written word says God gave us not the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding that mind steady in a room where a joke is coming.

You do not have to win that room. You do not have to fix it, leave it, or announce anything in it.

You only have to be the one whose heart is kept, and He is the one keeping it.

Declare this over yourself

The place you speak from is Christ's and it was given to you, so none of this rests on your nerve or your record. Whatever comes of it in that room is His to decide, and you are not being asked to manage the outcome.

  1. Joke I laughed at, you got a reflex out of me and you never once got my agreement, and you do not get to write on me. The Word of God says keep your heart with all diligence, so in the name of Jesus I am keeping mine, and the keeping starts the next time you come around.
  2. Conclusion that I would trade a man for belonging, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You are the one who woke me at eleven at night with a verse I learned at eight, and a conscience that aches is a conscience You are still holding.
  3. Lord Jesus, my conscience belongs to You and nobody at that table gets to hold the pen on it. Your word says the issues of life come out of the heart, and I am keeping the gate You set me over, and the next time it comes around I am the quiet one.
