He does the billing on Friday afternoons for a six truck excavating outfit, and he has done it for nine years, and he is good at it.
Since last September the equipment hours go out rounded up.
Not by much. Half an hour on a track hoe here, an hour on a dozer there, across nine or ten invoices. The way it got explained that first Friday made a kind of sense, something about setup and travel and how everybody in the trade does it, and he nodded, and he has not been able to make it make sense since about the third Friday.
So he started keeping the real number in pencil out in the margin of his own copy.
Nobody reads his own copy. It goes in the drawer in the gray cabinet behind him and it stays there until the box goes to storage in January. But every Friday at four o'clock, with the printer going, he writes the true figure in pencil beside the printed one, small, out where only he would ever look.
Eleven months of pencil.
Then in August he sold his father's old bush hog to a fellow from two counties over.
Man walked around it, kicked the wheel, and asked him what kind of hours were on it.
And he heard his own voice round it up.
Nobody had told him to do that one. Nobody was watching and the number did not even matter much to the price. His mouth had just learned the motion, the way a hand learns a latch, and it did it on its own in his own driveway on a Saturday.
He stood there after the truck pulled out and felt something he had not felt in eleven months, which was found out.
That evening he went in the house and got a fuel receipt off the counter and wrote the real hours on the back of it in ink. Then under that, in the same ink, he wrote one sentence he had never said to a living soul.
He folded it in half and put it in the top tray of his toolbox, under the sockets, where his wife would not find it and neither would anybody else.
Monday morning he went to work.
Nothing about his job had changed. Something about the man doing it had.
You know that pencil.
Maybe it is not an invoice. Maybe it is a report, a number in a form, a sentence somebody wants you to sign off on, a thing that gets said in that room every week that you have never once said out loud you disagree with. And you have been keeping a private account of it somewhere nobody reads, and you have started wondering what eleven months of that does to a person.

The lion is not the one doing the roaring
There is a proverb about this and it is one line long.
The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.Proverbs 28:1
Read what that boldness actually is. It is not volume. It is not a speech. Nobody in that verse gets a confrontation, a resignation or a raised voice.
It is the absence of flight.
A lion lies down in the open in the middle of the day because there is nothing behind him. That is the whole picture. He is not brave in the sense of doing something frightening. He is unhurried, because nothing is chasing him.
And what eleven months of Friday afternoons has actually cost you is not your job. It is the lying down. It is the flinch when the phone rings on a Tuesday, the extra half second before you answer a simple question, the way you have started reading a room before you walk into it.
You have a conscience that has been standing up every Friday since September, and it is not the thing in you that failed. Romans 9:1 has Paul say my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, which puts the Holy Spirit Himself inside the witness box, and that is exactly what has been making the pencil come out of the drawer every week. That was never guilt eating at you. That was Someone keeping watch.
Now hear this next part, because it is the one you have been quietly afraid of.
Staying is not the same thing as agreeing. It never was.
You have not spent eleven months lying. You have spent eleven months in a room you did not build, doing a job that feeds people you love, with something in you refusing to go along with it quietly enough to be comfortable. That refusal has a name, and it is not cowardice.
You are not numb, and the ache you have been reading as your own guilt is a witness who is still on duty. Hebrews 9:14 says the blood of Christ purges the conscience from dead works to serve the living God, so the conscience in you was cleaned to work, not to be quiet, and the Spirit who cleaned it is the one who keeps it awake.
Who holds the pen
In 1612 a man named Thomas Helwys printed a book saying that a mortal man has no power over an immortal soul, and then he did something almost nobody would do. He wrote his own name and his own address in the front of the copy he sent to the king.
He died in Newgate prison a few years later.
I am not telling you that story so you will do what he did. That is not what this is.
I am telling it to you because of what he said. Not what it cost him. What he said was that there is a part of a person that no power on earth can be handed, and no power on earth ever was handed, whatever anybody in any room seems to believe about it.
Which means the pressure in that room has never once been a transfer of ownership. It has been pressure. That is all it has ever been.
You are not owned, and the part of you that has been under pressure since September was never transferable. 1 Corinthians 6 says your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost and that you are bought with a price, so the deed to you is already filed, already paid, and already in the hands of the One who has the Spirit living in the building.
And let me say plainly what I will not do to you here.
I do not know your situation. I do not know what that job is holding up, or what a hard Monday would cost your family. So I am not handing you a course of action from a distance and then walking away to leave you standing in the consequences of it. Nobody who has never met you has any business doing that.
What I will do is change what you are standing on.
You have a Father who has not once mistaken your silence for your consent. Psalm 27:1 says the LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear, and it is the same Spirit who has been keeping that conscience awake who is telling you now that you have not been read the way you feared you were being read.
Here is what is on offer, and notice what it is not.
It is not a plan for Friday. It is not a script for a conversation. It is not permission to blow something up, and it is not an instruction to keep quiet either.
It is your own pen, back in your own hand, held by God and by nobody else.
You are holding a conscience God gave you and never signed over to anybody. James 4:12 says there is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy, and that seat is filled, and the Holy Spirit living in you is the down payment proving whose you are.
Eleven months of pencil is not eleven months wasted. That was a man keeping the truth alive in a margin until he had somewhere better to put it.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these standing in a place given to you rather than earned. The authority is Christ's and delegated, the Spirit who bears witness with your conscience is the one carrying it, and what comes of what you write tonight is His to decide.
- Friday at four o'clock, you are a task and you were never a verdict on my soul, and I am done letting you sign my name for me. Proverbs says the righteous are bold as a lion, and a lion lies down in the open because there is nothing behind him. You get the hour, but you do not get me.
- Fear that the day I say it out loud is the day everything falls, get out of this house in the name of Jesus, and take the shower arguments with you. Scripture says the Lord is my light and my salvation, and my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit. I am carrying a witness, not a secret.
- Lord, You bought me at a price and You have never once signed me over, so this pen is in Your hand and mine and nobody else's. Your word calls this body a temple of the Holy Spirit, and Your Spirit is the One who has been standing up in me every Friday since September. I am writing my one true sentence tonight and putting it where only I will find it.
