A Conscience That HoldsRomans 14:22

Copies of My Own Key

This message is for the family dinner where you agree with all of it to keep the evening

Tomas cuts keys on the corner of a street where three buses turn.

It is a narrow shop, one man wide, with a wall of blanks on little hooks going up past head height and the grinder that throws a smell like a struck match. He has cut keys for half this neighborhood. People bring him keys the way they bring a priest a worry, sideways, with the story attached: my son is coming back, my mother is getting worse, we changed the lock after what happened.

He is good at it. He is fifty eight and his hands still know the depth of a cut without looking.

Every second Sunday, Tomas has dinner at his brother in law's.

And for three hours, Tomas says yes.

Not lying. He would want that understood. Agreeing. Nodding in the right places, saying claro at the right moments, adding the small extra word that makes a man at the head of a room feel backed up. When Nico gives his opinion on what people who believe that are really like, Tomas moves his head. The evening stays warm. Everybody eats. Nobody has to smooth anything over on the phone the next day.

And driving home, his jaw aches on the left side, the same side, every time, and he has decided over eleven years that this is simply how his jaw is.

Then, on a Wednesday, a woman came in with a key.

Old key. Worn nearly smooth on the wards, the way they go when a hand has used one for thirty years. She put it on the counter and asked for two copies.

Tomas turned it over the way he turns them over. He said, kindly, because he is kind: senora, look at the wear on this. And this pattern is the old kind. If your lock is the one I think it is, this does not open anything anymore.

And she said: it is my mother's house. They changed the lock in April. I know.

He waited.

She said: I want two anyway. One for my daughter.

So he cut them. Two blanks off the hook, the vise, the grinder, the wire brush, the burr taken off with his thumb. She paid him and thanked him and went out into the noise of the buses.

And Tomas stood there with her original still in his hand and the place gone quiet, because it had just landed on him what he had been doing every second Sunday for eleven years.

He had been handing out copies of his own key.

Not so anybody could open anything. So that nobody at that table would ever have to know there was a door.

And the thing he could not get past, standing there with the brass warm in his palm, was her. She knew exactly what that key was. Worn smooth, opening nothing, lock changed in April, and she never once asked him whether it was still real. She was not confused about it for a second.

You have a room like that. Second Sundays, or Thursdays, or the annual one in December that costs you a week either side.

Copies of My Own Key

A key is not made real by a lock

The first thing to say is the thing nobody says to a man like Tomas.

You have not failed. Not on any of those Sundays, not once in eleven years, and if you came in braced for somebody to finally call you a coward, you can put that down, because it is not coming and it was never true. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, the written word says exactly that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says it over you, not me.

There is a room where you are outnumbered, and one man's evening against everybody's evening is not a fair fight, and you have been keeping the peace at that table with the only currency you had. That is not a moral collapse. That is a tired man with a jaw that aches on the left.

But something has to be handed back to you, and Paul says it in one line to a church that could not agree about anything:

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.Romans 14:22, KJV

Have it to thyself before God.

That is not a consolation prize for people too timid to speak. It is a right, stated plainly, in the same chapter where he tells everybody to be fully persuaded in their own mind. A conviction held quietly before God is not a downgraded conviction. It is kept in the place where it is actually kept, which was never the dining room.

So take this over yourself right now, because it is the written word and not my encouragement: what you believe is intact. It did not thin out on any of those Sundays. The Holy Spirit did not withdraw a single thing from you while you were nodding at the head of that table, because He is not in the business of confiscating a man's faith for being tired in a hard room.

Her key was real on the counter and real in her purse, with the lock changed in April, and nothing that happened at that door reached back and unmade it.

Now the harder half.

The verse says happy is the man who does not condemn himself. Read that again, because Paul is not talking about the room. He is talking about the drive home. He knows exactly where this costs a person, and it is not at the table, it is in the car, alone, at eleven at night, replaying the sound of your own agreeing voice and quietly passing sentence on yourself.

That verdict has no right to stay in your car. Scripture puts happy and condemneth not in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is not the one running that trial. He convicts about sin, and He does it clearly and kindly and to your face; He does not sit in the passenger seat for eleven years drip feeding a man contempt. What He wants back is not your confession of cowardice. It is the key.

And here is what this message will not do, so that you can relax and receive the rest of it.

It will not tell you what to say at the next dinner. It does not know Nico, or what your wife absorbs afterward, or which of those people would use one honest sentence as a weapon for a decade. Somebody writing from a distance has no business handing you a script for a room they have never sat in, and the Holy Spirit, who is actually in that room with you, does not need one written for Him.

What is being handed back is the original. Not a plan. The key.

Your conscience belongs to God. It is already His, and already yours to hold in His presence, and no evening and no relative has ever transferred the title. That is what Romans 14 is doing when it says have it to thyself before God, and His Spirit keeps it cut true in the dark where nobody in that room can inspect the teeth.

The breakthrough

Get a piece of paper.

Write down the sentence. The one you have been carrying under all those Sundays, the one you have never said in that room, in the plain words you would use if you were telling only God, which is precisely what you are doing.

Do not draft it as a speech. This is not the beginning of a confrontation and it is not preparation for one. It is a man putting his key back on his own ring, which is exactly what Romans 14 calls having it to yourself before God, and His Spirit is the one holding it steady while you write.

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is why this holds: what an ambassador carries is his King's, and no dinner table on earth has jurisdiction over it. Whether anything in that room ever changes is His to decide and the outcome is His. What is yours tonight is the original, in your hand, where it always was.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is the only standing anybody has to speak like this: an ambassador carries his King's word, never his own opinion. Scripture has settled that a man may have his faith to himself before God and be happy and not condemned, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps it true where nobody can see it. Whether that room ever changes is His to decide and the outcome is His. The key is yours.

  1. Yes I hand across that room, you are a habit and you are not my conscience, and I am keeping the original tonight. Romans 14 says have it to thyself before God, so a thing held quietly is a thing still held. What is in my pocket going home is mine, and it still turns.
  2. Verdict I pass on myself in the car at eleven at night, get off me in the name of Jesus. The written word puts happy and condemneth not in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts kindly and to my face and never drip feeds a man contempt for eleven years. Conscience, you belong to God, and you were never for hire at anybody's dinner.
  3. Lord, You have never once mistaken a quiet key for a counterfeit, and You are not mistaking mine. Holy Spirit, You keep it cut true in the dark where nobody at that table can inspect the teeth, and You have never asked me to prove it to them first. I am writing my sentence down tonight, and I am putting it where only You and I will find it.
