Say It Once and Pass the Salt

This message is for the four coworkers who have known you since the merger and do not know this about you

Nate Ferreira had prayed in the parking lot of that building every workday for three years, and nobody on the fifth floor had the faintest idea.

He did it in the car with the engine off, thirty seconds, sometimes less. Then he took the lanyard off the mirror, put it over his head, and went up.

There were four of them at the Thursday table. Deb from finance, who had been there since before the merger and had opinions about the new carpet. Kwame, who ran the migration and could not be beaten at any card game ever invented. Sofia, who brought her own lunch in three separate containers because she did not believe in mixing food. And Rich, who was seventy percent silence and thirty percent the single funniest observation you would hear all month.

They knew Nate's coffee order. They knew his daughter played goalkeeper and that he could not spell Wednesday without saying it out loud first. They knew about his back. They knew he hated the new badge photo.

They did not know he had been a believer since he was twenty six.

It was not a decision he had made. That was the strange part. There had never been a Tuesday where he sat down and resolved to keep it quiet. It had simply stayed where it started, which was somewhere behind his sternum, and eleven years had gone by, and now the not saying had its own weight, the way an unsent message does.

Then, on an ordinary Thursday, over a foil tray of something with peppers in it, Kwame put his fork down and said, half joking, the way people say the real ones:

"Does anybody here actually believe in anything? Like, actually?"

Deb laughed. Sofia said something about her mother. Rich said nothing, which was normal.

And Nate heard his own voice come out of his own mouth, in the room, at ordinary volume.

"I do. I believe Jesus is alive and that He has me."

Then came the worst four seconds of his professional life, in which he wanted, with everything in him, to explain. To put a frame around it. To say I mean, I'm not weird about it, or my wife's family, you know how it is, or any of the nine hundred softening sentences he had been keeping in a drawer for eleven years in case this ever happened.

He did not use one of them.

He reached across the table and passed Sofia the salt, because she had been reaching for it.

Deb said, "Huh."

Kwame said, "Okay."

Sofia said thanks for the salt.

And lunch went on, and the peppers were fine, and Nate walked back to his desk with his ears ringing and something in his chest that had been folded up small for eleven years standing all the way up, taking up its own room, breathing.

Say It Once and Pass the Salt

From the collarbone in

There is one sentence in Romans that gives your faith a second address.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:10

Two places named. The heart, and the mouth. And here is the thing almost nobody notices about them, because we are all so braced for a test: neither one is the exam that grades the other.

Look at what the heart's believing already accomplished. Unto righteousness. Finished. Settled. Done in a place nobody at your table can see, without a witness, without a microphone, without one person on the fifth floor ever being told.

So hear this before anything else is said to you. You were righteous in Him through all eleven of those years. Not provisionally. Not on file pending disclosure. That is not my generous reading of your situation. Romans 10:10 says the heart believes unto righteousness, and it is the Holy Spirit who sealed that in you the day it happened, and He does not hold a receipt back until a person gets braver.

Which means the quiet was never a debt.

I want to be very slow here, because this is where people get hurt. You have not been living in disobedience with a countdown running. The years you kept it in were years God was in there with you. The written word never calls a private believer a lesser one, and the Holy Spirit was not standing outside the parking lot waiting for you to earn the rest of Him. He was in the car. He was in the thirty seconds with the engine off.

So what is the mouth for, then.

Not for proving it. For inhabiting it. The word Paul uses for what the mouth is unto is the word for being brought out safe and whole, and there is a whole part of you that has been living folded up small. A faith that lives only from the collarbone in is real and it is also cramped, the way a good voice is real and cramped when it has only ever been used at a whisper.

And this is the beautiful, ordinary, non-dramatic thing about a body saying what a heart already settled: it is a picture the church has been making for two thousand years, the whole self going down and coming up in front of everybody, because what a person believes is allowed to be seen. That picture is not a bill you owe. Nobody is putting a date in front of you, or a room, or a process. Not here. Not once.

You are allowed to be a whole person out loud. That is not permission I am granting you, it is a thing the written word already handed you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence come out of a chest that has been closed for a decade, which is why the four seconds afterward feel the way they do.

One more thing, and it is the part that makes it survivable.

You are not being asked to argue. The written word never handed you that job, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a closing statement out of anybody. Nobody at any lunch table has ever been argued into anything, and you were never qualified for that job anyway. What you are qualified for is one fact about yourself, which is the only subject on earth where you are the expert in the room. You are not opening a case. You are saying a true thing and passing the salt.

The breakthrough

There is no ceremony required for what is about to happen. There is no room to book and no one to ask.

You have carried a true thing quietly and carefully and for a long time, and it did not spoil in there. It is intact. What is in you is not a rumor and it is not a phase, and it does not need a vote from four people at a table to become real. Romans 10:10 says the heart already believed unto righteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that alive in you through eleven silent years, which is a longer faithfulness than most people ever get told about.

Today the only thing that changes is that it stops living entirely on the inside.

One sentence. Not a testimony, not a defense, not the whole history. One true sentence about what you believe, said at ordinary volume, to one person.

And then, this is the important part, you do not explain it. You do not soften it. You do not add the disclaimer that has been in the drawer since 2015.

You pass the salt.

Declare this over yourself

Your standing is Christ's standing delegated to you, and you speak as His ambassador and never as the owner of anybody else's conscience. Keep these words under "not my will, but Thine." God remains sovereign over every room and every answer, and His written word remains settled beneath your feet.

  1. Thursday table on the fifth floor, you have known my coffee order for three years and nothing about the middle of me. The word of God says that with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, so in the name of Jesus you stop being a courtroom in my head and go back to being four people and a salt shaker.
  2. Fear that if I say it out loud my life will get held up against it and come out short, get off my chest in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You did not put this in me to be graded, and the believing was righteousness in me before one syllable of it ever got out.
  3. Lord Jesus, You heard me from the collarbone in for eleven years, and Your word never once called that silence a debt. Today my mouth catches up with my heart, one sentence at ordinary volume, and then I am passing the salt.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
