The Porch Prayer Went Inside

This message is for the prayer you say out loud in the car and stop saying at the door

Naomi Pike prayed out loud on her porch every morning at twenty to six, and she was not quiet about it.

Full voice. Names and everything. She stood at the rail with her hands flat on the wood where forty years of hands had worn it smooth, and she went down the list: her sister Ada, Ada's boy who could not hold a job, the woman at the post office whose husband had gone bad, the road crew, the weather, the calf. She thanked God for the light coming up over the far ridge before it got there, because it always got there.

Nobody heard her. That was the arrangement. There was nothing between her porch and the creek but sixty feet of wet grass and a dog who had heard it all before.

Then on Sundays she drove down to Ada's, and at the kitchen door something in her closed like a hand.

Eleven years of that door. Ada would say, Naomi, you want to say the blessing, and Naomi would say, oh, you go ahead, honey, and Ada always did. It became a little joke in that family, the way a thing becomes a joke when nobody wants to look straight at it. Aunt Naomi does not pray out loud. And Naomi let it stand, because letting it stand was easier than explaining that she prayed out loud every single day of her life to an empty holler.

She could have told you why. At the rail, nobody could misunderstand her. Inside that kitchen there were eight people who might.

Then came the Sunday in March when the ham was already on the table and Ada was at the sink with her back turned and said it without turning around. Naomi. Say the blessing.

Not a question. Ada had probably not even planned it.

And there was one of those pauses that lasts about a second and a half and feels like a season.

What came out of Naomi Pike was not a blessing over food. It was the porch. It was the same voice with the same list, and it started the way it always started, God, You are exactly who You say You are and I have never had one reason to doubt it, and by the second sentence she was thanking Him for the light before it got there, and she named Ada, and she named Ada's boy right there at the table with him sitting in it, and she said amen and picked up the bowl of beans.

The kitchen went still the way the holler goes still just before light.

Nobody said a word about it. That family had the sense not to. Ada's eyes were wet and she did not turn around from the sink for another minute.

Later, on the step, Ada's grandson, who was seven, asked her, Aunt Naomi, do you do that every day?

And she said, yes.

And she did not explain it.

The Porch Prayer Went Inside

Whosoever says it

John was an old man when he wrote this, and old men do not waste words.

Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.1 John 4:15

Read what is not in that sentence. There is no audience named. There is no volume set. There is no waiting period, no minimum, no note about how long you took to get around to it. Whosoever. It is the plainest word in the verse and it is doing the most work.

You are inside that word right now. Not on the edge of it, not applying to it. Inside it. I am not handing you my opinion of your situation. John wrote whosoever, and the Spirit who moved him to write it is the same Spirit keeping house in you, and He has never once added a footnote to that word to keep somebody out.

Now look at the second half, because that is where the pressure comes off. God dwelleth in him, and he in God. Dwelling. Not visiting. The dwelling is the thing that is already settled, and the confession is what says out loud what is already the case.

That is the difference between what you have been carrying and what is actually being asked of you. You have been standing at the door thinking you have to produce something in there. You do not have to produce anything. You have to say a thing that is already true.

The faith you have been saying to your windshield is not a rehearsal for the real thing. It is the real thing, and it is already yours. Scripture calls it dwelling, not performing, and the Holy Spirit is not sitting in the passenger seat waiting to see whether you can do it in front of people before He counts it.

Now let me name the actual weight, because I know the shape of it.

The reason your voice stops at the door is not cowardice. It is that alone in the car, there is nobody who can misunderstand you. Inside, there is a person who might. There is a face that might change. There is a brother-in-law who might make it a topic. And you have been protecting something valuable the only way you knew, which is by keeping it where nothing could get at it.

Hear this plainly. Nobody is holding your years of quiet against you, least of all Him. The word says God is love, and love does not stand at a door with a stopwatch. The Spirit who has kept you company on every mile of that drive was never grading the drive.

But a thing kept where nothing can get at it also stays where nothing can be warmed by it.

And you are not fragile. You are carrying a dwelling, and a dwelling is built to be lived in. That is not my encouragement talking. John wrote that God dwelleth in you, and the Holy Spirit does not move into a person and then need protecting by that person.

Here is what Naomi found out on the far side of a second and a half. The words did not have to be church words. They came out in porch words, which were the only words she had ever used for it, and porch words were enough, because what makes a confession is not its polish. What makes a confession is that it is yours and it is out loud.

Your own plain words carry the whole weight of it. The word never once asks for eloquence, and the Spirit who takes an ordinary sentence and lands it in somebody's chest has never needed a better one.

The breakthrough

You are at the door right now, and I want you to notice something. You already have the words. You have said them ten thousand times.

The confession is not a new thing you must go get. It is the thing you already say when nobody is listening, said once where somebody is.

Not a speech. Not a testimony with three points. One sentence, the one you say at the second stoplight, said out loud in a room with a person in it.

It is yours to say, and it is yours today. Scripture puts the confession in the mouth of whosoever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries an ordinary sentence out of an ordinary mouth and does what only He does with it.

And whatever happens in the room after you say it is not yours to manage. That has been the other half of the weight. Set that half down too.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these as one standing in Christ, and the authority in them is His, delegated to you, never your own. Say them under "not my will, but Thine": He may answer in His own way, and His written word stands settled under your feet either way.

  1. Doorway, you have been holding my voice for eleven years, and you were never given the authority to hold anything. The word of God says whosoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God has God dwelling in him, so in the name of Jesus I carry the same voice through you that I use at the rail.
  2. Fear that they will look at me differently once they hear it, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You have been dwelling in me the whole quiet way here, and what dwells in a house is allowed to speak in it.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are exactly who You say You are, and I have never had one reason to doubt it. Your word calls this confession mine to make, so I am saying one true sentence out loud today to a person with a face, and I am not explaining it afterward.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
