Down to the WaterPsalm 40:9

The Order of Service in Your Coat Pocket

This message is for the funeral where you were the only believer in the room and said nothing at all

It has been through the wash once, so it is soft now, more cloth than paper, and the ink has gone the color of weak tea.

She finds it every autumn. The coat comes down off the hook on the first cold morning, she puts her hand in the right pocket the way anybody does, and there it is, folded in four, waiting for her.

It is her aunt's order of service. Nine years ago. A photograph on the front from a holiday in the sixties, a hymn nobody in the room knew, and two poems.

She stood at the back because she got there late. Forty of us in a low room with the heating up too high, and she looked along the rows at cousins she had grown up with and knew, in the ordinary way you know things, that she was the only one there who believed any of it.

Afterward there were sandwiches on foil trays and a lot of talking. Somebody said she was a star now, looking down. Somebody said at least she is not in pain. Her cousin, who had held it together all morning and could not hold it any longer, said, "That's it then. That's the lot of her."

And she had a sentence.

It was not a clever sentence and it was not a speech. It was one plain true thing, and it had been sitting in her chest since the first hymn, and it was the only thing in that room she actually believed.

She looked at her cousin's face. She looked at the foil trays. She put her hand around the paper cup and said, "Do you want a refill?"

She drove home in the dark past the outlet stores with the radio off. And at the last stoplight before her exit she hit the steering wheel once with the flat of her hand, and then she was fine, and she has never told anybody that she did that.

Nine autumns. The coat, the pocket, the soft paper folded in four.

And one true sentence that has never once been said out loud in a room with other people in it.

The Order of Service in Your Coat Pocket

Lo, thou knowest

So do you.

There is a psalm for exactly this, and the strange thing about it is who it is addressed to.

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.Psalm 40:9

Look at that. He is talking about the great congregation, the packed room, the public thing, and he is not saying it to the congregation. He turns and says it to God. Thou knowest. The one sentence in Scripture about a mouth that did not stay shut is spoken privately, to the only One who can see what was actually in the man.

That is the shape of the whole business, and it is the shape of your nine autumns. God knows what was in you at the back of that low room. He knew the sentence. He heard it in you at the first hymn, and He heard it again at that stoplight, and the Holy Spirit does not need it repeated back to Him for the record.

You are known already, all the way down, and Psalm 40:9 is a man appealing to exactly that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries an old appeal into a coat pocket nine years later.

Now look where the psalm starts, because David did not open at the microphone.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and shall fear, and shall trust in the LORD.Psalm 40:2, 3

Count what He does. He brings up. He sets the feet. He establishes the going. He puts the song in the mouth. Four things, all of them His, and only then does anybody see anything.

The seeing is last, and the seeing is a consequence, not an assignment. The song is not something you compose under pressure in a room full of sandwiches. It is put there. It was put there.

You have a song in your mouth that God Himself put there, and it did not stop being there because a room went by without hearing it. Psalm 40 says He put it, and what He puts, He does not quietly withdraw, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping it warm in you all these autumns.

Let me name what actually happened that afternoon, because you have never let this finish its sentence.

It was not cowardice. You looked at your cousin, whose mother had died four days before, and you understood in one second that the true thing in your chest, said in that room at that moment, would have landed on him as a correction. And you loved him too much to correct him beside the foil trays. That is not a failure of nerve. That is mercy arriving at an hour with no room in it.

And if it was plain fear, hear this too: fear in a room like that is not a charge sheet either. Nobody who ministers to you gets to hand you a bill for an afternoon nine years ago. The work of getting a person to the place where they can speak belongs to us, never to you, and I am not putting one ounce of that on your back.

You are not a lesser believer for the rooms you have been quiet in. Not one line of Scripture ranks believers by decibels, Psalm 40:9 hands the whole account of a mouth to God because only He can read it, and the Holy Spirit inside you has never once graded you against your cousin.

So why does it matter at all whether it ever gets said?

Not because saying it upgrades you. Because a thing held silently is real, and a thing said out loud is reachable. That is the whole gift. God made us so that what is in one person can cross the air into another person, and a mouth is how it crosses. Down at the water, where a whole body says what a heart has been saying for years, nobody standing on the bank is being graded and nobody is being ranked. Something is simply being made visible so that it can be shared.

Hear what I am not saying, plainly. I am not sending you to a date, a ceremony, a form, or anybody's process. I am not asking you to explain yourself to your family or to go back and reopen a funeral. One sentence. One person. That is the whole of it.

You are allowed to be seen. That was settled long before you were born, it stands written in a psalm that hands the great congregation over to God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary sentence land somewhere it can be received.

And when it comes, it comes gently. Peter told believers to be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks a reason of the hope in them, with meekness. Asked. Meekness. That is a low doorway, and it is nothing like the room you have been rehearsing.

The breakthrough

You are not going back to that afternoon. That room is closed, those sandwiches are long gone, and the afternoon is not owed anything by you.

The sentence is not a debt. It is still in you, whole, and Psalm 40:3 says who put it there, and the Holy Spirit has kept it warm through nine autumns without once asking you to account for the delay. It has been looking for one person all this time, not for a congregation and not for the worst hour of somebody's life.

So this is the turn. Take the paper out of the pocket if you want to, and put it somewhere it can be an ordinary keepsake instead of a summons. Then think of one name. Not the hardest name. The next name.

Say your sentence, and leave the outcome with Him. However He answers, and He answers as He chooses, the song in your mouth was put there by God and it is not on trial in anybody's kitchen.

Declare this over yourself

Say these somewhere with the door shut, in the coat if it helps. The standing under them is not something you work up to: you are in Christ, what is in you was given to you, and Psalm 40:9 is the ground it rests on, with the Holy Spirit carrying an old line into this week. Then say your one sentence and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with it is His to decide and was never yours to produce.

  1. Order of service gone soft in my pocket, you are a folded piece of paper and you were never a charge against me. Psalm 40 says the Lord put a new song in my mouth, and a song He put there is a song that is still there. Stay in the coat if you like; you were never the room where this gets said.
  2. Fear that the truest thing in me can only ever land as a correction, you are out of this coat and out of this house, in the name of Jesus. The Word of God tells me to give my answer with meekness, and meekness has never needed a raised voice or somebody's worst afternoon. What I carry is good news, and good news is not an argument I am losing.
  3. Lord, You know. Your word says lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest, and You knew every word of what was in me in a low room where I said nothing at all. I am telling one person one true sentence this week, out loud, and I am not explaining it afterward.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
