Down to the WaterMatthew 10:32

The Shutter That Would Not Come Down

This message is for the family group chat where I have never once typed His name

Nadir baked the lane's bread. Flat, wide, blistered, out of the oven in ninety seconds, four hundred of them a day, and the whole lane ate it and had eaten it since his grandfather's time.

At night, after the shutter came down, he baked a different bread.

His mother's. Dark, heavier, a slow dough that took most of the evening, black seed pressed into the crust, brushed with olive oil and the smallest amount of honey while it was still too hot to touch. Nobody in the lane had eaten it in eleven years except the four people at his own table.

There was a reason, and it was small, and it had held for a very long time.

When he was nineteen he had brought a tray of it out to the front counter, proud of it, and a man he respected had picked one up, turned it over twice, and said, "That is not how we do it here."

That was all. Nobody shouted. The man bought two of the flat ones and went home.

And Nadir took the tray back through the curtain, and for eleven years he baked his mother's bread after closing.

Then the roller spring on the shutter went.

It went at nine in the evening with a bang like a dropped pan, and the shutter shot halfway up and stuck, and the whole front of the shop stood open to the lane. Nadir hauled on it, put a broom handle through it, stood on a crate. It would not come down.

The dough was already proved. Four hours of it, sitting there, past the point where a man can put it in the cold and pretend tomorrow will do.

So he baked his mother's bread with the front of his shop standing wide open.

And the smell went out into the lane before he had decided anything.

Black seed hitting a hot stone makes a smell that carries further than it has any right to. It went up the lane and around the corner where the barber was locking up, and it went in through the window of the house opposite where a woman was arguing with her son about homework.

They came out.

An old woman in slippers, holding her cardigan shut. Two boys. The barber. The woman from opposite, still holding a pen. And last of all the man who fixes shutters, who looked at the spring, said it was tomorrow's job at the earliest, and stood there in the doorway eating a piece of it with his other hand.

Nobody said anything about how they do it here. They ate it. Somebody asked what the black seeds were. Somebody else took two home for the morning.

At midnight Nadir swept the floor of a shop he could not close, and it landed on him properly.

The argument he had spent eleven years avoiding had never happened. What had happened was one sentence from one man when he was nineteen, and he had been the one holding the shutter down every night since.

Your chat is on your phone right now. Two hundred messages a day. Birthdays, a car somebody is selling, exam results, a photograph of a baby with somebody's nose.

You believe. You have believed for years.

And you have never once typed His name in there.

The Shutter That Would Not Come Down

Nothing is wrong with you

Before anything else, I want to take one thing off you, because I think you have been carrying it into that chat every day and it is not yours.

The years of quiet are not a fault. They are not cowardice, and they are not proof of anything about your heart. Somewhere back there something happened, probably something small: a face, a pause, a sentence at a table, an eye roll from somebody whose opinion mattered to you more than they will ever know. And you did the sane thing. You went quiet in that one room and stayed warm everywhere else, and you have been baking at night ever since.

That is not a person with weak faith. That is a person who got hurt once and made a reasonable arrangement.

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.Matthew 10:32

Look at the word Jesus uses. To confess there is to say the same thing: to let the outside of you agree with the inside of you, out loud, where somebody can hear it. It is not to argue. It is not to win a thread. It is not to make a speech at a wedding.

And look at what He puts on the other side of it. Not a grade. Not an inspection. Him, doing the same thing for you, in front of His Father. It is two people naming each other, and He goes first and He has never once hesitated.

And you are already named by Him in front of the Father, right now, while your name has never appeared next to His in that chat. I am not putting a kind thought on you: that is what the written word says He does with the ones who are His, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a fact about you rather than a nice idea about believers.

The smell went out before he decided anything

Here is what I love about that night in the lane.

Nadir never made a brave decision. He never stood in the doorway and announced anything. The shutter jammed, the dough was proved, and the truth of what he had been making for eleven years simply got out into the air, because that is what a thing does when it stops being covered.

You have been assuming that this has to start with courage. It does not. It starts with the covering coming off.

And what you actually believe is allowed to be seen, and it does not need a speech to become visible. The word puts confession before men in the ordinary sense of being heard by people, not in the sense of winning them, and His Spirit is the one who carries a plain sentence further than it has any right to go.

The body says it

There is a reason that from the very beginning people did not settle this with a signature in a back room. They walked out to the water, in front of everybody, and their own body said it for them, because something is settled by a body doing a thing that a private conviction never quite settles on its own.

I am not sending you anywhere, and I am not asking you to arrange anything, and nothing in this message is a comment on what has or has not already happened in your life. That is between you and God and it is not my business.

I am only telling you what the shape of it has always been. Inside, then out. Believed, then said. Not because the saying earns anything, but because a thing kept permanently indoors starts to feel to its owner like a rumor.

And what is true of you does not become truer by being said, and it does become yours to live in. Scripture holds the believing and the confessing together in one breath, and the Spirit who put the belief in you is the same one standing with you in the two seconds before you press send.

The breakthrough

Here is what is on the table tonight, and it is not a plan for the chat, because I do not know your family and you do.

It is the covering.

Not the belief. You already have that, and you have had it a long time, and nobody is grading how quietly you have held it. What is coming off tonight is the lid, and it is coming off from the inside, where it was always fastened.

And He is not waiting for you to be impressive before He owns you in front of His Father, because He already has. The word says it plainly, His Spirit makes it personal rather than general, and what any of them do with it afterward is His to handle and never yours to manufacture.

The shutter is up. The dough is proved. Bake it with the front open.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Silence I have kept in that chat, you have been shelter and you have stayed too long, and you are not the shape of my faith. Scripture puts the confessing out where people can hear it, plainly and without a speech, so tonight one true sentence of mine goes outside my mouth.
  2. Verdict that a quiet believer is a lesser one, you are put out of this house in the name of Jesus. You have been reading eleven years of night baking as evidence against me and reading it wrong, and Jesus is naming me in front of the Father tonight while you are still counting my silences.
  3. Lord, what I believe is allowed to be seen, and my own mouth gets to say it. You confess me before Your Father and You never once hesitated over how long I took, and I am taking the covering off the thing I have been making at night for eleven years.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
