He Said Left

This message is for the coworker who mentioned his mother's diagnosis at the coffee machine, and what I said

Mansour sold cold water at the edge of the market, where the road came in past the water tower.

He carried it. A brass urn on his back with a strap across the chest, sixty pounds when it was full, two cups on chains at his belt and a small tap at his hip. He bent forward from the waist and the water came, and the cups clinked against each other when he walked, which is how the whole market knew he was coming before they saw him.

Twenty years of that. In the hot part of the afternoon he could not go ten steps without somebody putting a hand up.

And people asked him things. All day. Where is the man who sharpens knives. Is the fabric seller open on a Thursday. What time does the light go off in this street. He answered all of it without stopping, out of the side of his mouth, mid pour, the way a man answers when his hands are full and his back is loaded.

One afternoon a woman stopped him with a child on her hip.

She did not want water. She wanted to know whether the road to the hospital went left or right at the water tower.

And Mansour said, "Left."

He said it in exactly the voice he used for the price of a cup. She thanked him and she went left, into the heat, with the child.

It was right.

He knew it two seconds later, with the sentence already gone and his hands already busy with somebody else's cup. He turned around. She was in the crowd, then she was not.

And he stood there in the middle of the afternoon with sixty pounds of water on his back and could not think of one single thing to do about it.

That evening he did not go home the usual way.

He walked to the water tower and stood at the junction. Then he walked the left road, the whole of it, until it ended at a quarry gate two miles out with a chain across it. Then he walked back, and he walked the right road until he could see the wall of the hospital and the gate people go in by.

It was dark when he got home. Nobody asked him to do that. Nobody ever knew he had.

He was not fixing anything, and he knew he was not, because there was nothing left that could be fixed.

But for the next eleven years, if anybody asked him anything about that junction, he knew.

He never once told that story as a good story. When he told it at all, and it was not often, he told it as the afternoon he found out that a man can spend twenty years being extremely useful at one thing and be completely unready in the four seconds when somebody needs a different thing from him.

You have a coffee machine.

He was waiting for it to finish, standing side on, not looking at you, and he said it the way people say the enormous things: quietly, in a gap, as though it were small. His mother's scan came back. It is not good.

And you said, "Oh no. That's rough."

Or you said you were sorry. Or you said something about how they can do a lot these days.

And then the machine beeped and you both walked back to your desks.

You have thought about it about forty times since.

He Said Left

What actually happened in those four seconds

Let me take the verdict off you first, because you have been carrying it since Tuesday and it is a false one.

That was not a failure of love. You love that man enough to have thought about it forty times, and a person who did not care would have forgotten it by lunch.

It was a failure of readiness, and readiness is not a grade on your character. You had four seconds. You were holding a hot cup. He said it sideways, on purpose, because that is how a person says a thing they cannot yet say properly, and nobody in your entire life has ever handed you the sentence for that moment. So your mouth did what a mouth does when it is not ready. It reached for the nearest true thing and came back with a reflex.

I am not going to let you carry four seconds as evidence about your heart.

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus.Acts 20:24

Look at the one word everything hangs on. Received.

Paul does not say the ministry he pursued, or applied for, or was found worthy of. He says the one he received, which is what you say about a thing that was put into your hands by somebody else. And he says it standing on a beach at Miletus in the middle of an ordinary week of work, with a boat waiting.

And you have received a ministry already, in a building with a coffee machine on the third floor, and you did not have to qualify for it. I am not being generous with you: the written word calls it a thing received rather than achieved, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a fact about the person who has been replaying a Tuesday, and not a fine idea about the apostles.

The verdict you drew, and where it came from

Here is what you concluded in the car afterward, and you have never said it out loud.

You decided that God's real work gets done by people who are ready. People with the sentence. People who would have put the cup down and said the right thing and prayed with him by the window, and that those people exist and are in other rooms and you are not one of them.

That is the pit, and I am naming it because I do not think you have.

And the sending starts where you are standing, in that exact room, and it has never once required you to be somewhere else first. Scripture gives Paul a course to finish and not a place to reach, and His Spirit is the one who does the sending, which is why it never waited for you to feel equipped.

Mansour did not become a better water seller that night. He became a man who knew a mile.

What is in your hands is not small

You know where he sits. You know he goes for coffee at about twenty to eleven. You know he takes it black and complains about the machine and you know the sound of his laugh from three desks away.

That is not a poor substitute for ministry. That is the entire mechanism of it, which is proximity, and it cannot be bought, downloaded, transferred or hurried. Eleven years of sitting near somebody is a qualification no conference issues.

And what is already in your hands is enough to be sent with, right now, without one thing added to it. The word never once tells a believer to acquire something before they are usable, and the Spirit who put you in that building put you three desks from a man whose mother is ill.

I am not telling you to do anything large. Nothing here asks you for money, for hours you do not have, or for a version of your life with more room in it than your life has. That is not what this is.

The breakthrough

Here is what is on the table tonight, and it is not a script for the next conversation, because there is no script and the good ones never had one either.

It is the room.

Your floor. Your machine. Your Tuesday. The man three desks over whose mother is ill and who has told exactly one person at that office, and it was you, because something in him picked you out of everybody there.

He picked you already. That is the thing to sit with.

And you are sent from where you are standing, tonight, with the hands you already have, because He is the one who does the sending and He has already done it. The word says the ministry is received, His Spirit makes it personal rather than general, and what comes of it is His to bring about and never yours to guarantee.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Coffee machine on the third floor, you heard the worst sentence of his year and you heard the best I had ready, and you are not the verdict on me. Scripture calls a ministry a thing received and never a thing earned, so this week at twenty to eleven I am asking him how she is.
  2. Fear that I am not the kind God sends, you are put out in the name of Jesus. You have taken four unready seconds and called them a report on my heart, and Paul had his course handed to him on a beach in the middle of an ordinary working week.
  3. Lord, the sending starts where I am standing, and what is already in my hands is enough to be sent with. You gave Paul a course to finish rather than a place to reach, and You put me three desks from a man whose mother is ill, so I am naming him tonight and going to him this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
