Room at the TableJames 1:19

Three Rugs Deep

This message is for the cousin whose posts I muted two years ago and have not unmuted

The wall between the two courtyards was one brick thick, which in that lane meant it was not really a wall at all.

Tariq had grown up hearing everything through it. The neighbor's kettle. The neighbor's gate. Their boy practicing the same eight bars for four years, the same mistake in the same place, until one summer he stopped making it and Tariq stood still in his own yard with a bucket in his hand, absurdly pleased for a child he barely spoke to.

And on Friday evenings, at eight, the neighbor Ilyas sang.

He put the radio on and he sang along to three songs, always the same three, always a fraction behind the beat, and always in a key that had nothing to do with the one coming out of the radio. It was terrible. Tariq's wife used to time it. Their daughter could do an imitation of it that reduced the whole table to nothing.

Then something was said in the lane one August.

I am not going to tell you what it was, partly because it does not matter to this and partly because you already have your own version of it, and yours is more accurate about your own life than anything I could invent.

What I will tell you is what Tariq did.

He hung a rug on the wall.

An old one first, doubled over, on two nails. It helped, but not enough. So he hung a second one over it, a heavy kilim his mother had woven, and that was better. And a few months later he found a third at the market and put that up too, and after that the wall was quiet.

Three rugs deep.

And he liked it. That is the part nobody tells you about. He got work done in that yard. He slept better in the summer with the window open. He stopped bracing every time he heard a gate. For two years his house was easier to think in, and he was not wrong about any of that.

Then one Friday evening he noticed where he was standing.

He was at the wall. Close to it. Near enough that his shoulder was almost touching the third rug, and he had a cup in his hand that had gone cold, and the clock in the kitchen said eight.

He had no idea how many Fridays he had done that. He genuinely could not have said. Twenty. Fifty. Every one of them.

And he was not standing there waiting for an apology. He was not standing there rehearsing what he would say. He was standing there listening for a man singing badly, three rugs away, and he could not hear him, and he had hung all three himself.

You have a cousin.

You muted them two years ago. It took four seconds and you did not tell anybody, and the feed went quiet, and it was better.

And you have checked twice this month.

Three Rugs Deep

The mute was not the sin

Let me say this before anything else, because if I do not you will read the rest of it through a fog of guilt and hear nothing.

Muting them was not a sin, and I am not calling it one.

It is often the merciful thing. It stops a fight in a lane in front of everybody. It keeps a marriage out of a subject that has cost other marriages plenty. It keeps you from typing the sentence at midnight that you would spend four years trying to take back. If that is what yours did, it did honest work and you were right to do it.

The trouble is the second job you gave it without noticing.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.James 1:19

Look at where James puts the speed. On the hearing. He never says be slow to believe things, and he never says hold your convictions more loosely. He puts the brake on the mouth and on the temper, and he leaves the hearing wide open and running fast, which means a person can be entirely settled about what is true and still be the quickest listener in the room.

And you are allowed to hold what you believe at full weight tonight, all of it, without softening one line of it. That is not my permission to give: the written word slows the speaking and the anger and never once asks anybody to believe less, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a conviction firm and a person tender at the same time, which nobody manages on their own.

What happens behind a rug

Here is what I think has actually happened in those two years, and it has not happened to your cousin. It has happened to you.

A conviction you never have to carry in front of anybody stops being carried. It gets stored. And a stored conviction does a strange thing: it goes from something you hold to something you defend, and those feel similar from the inside and they are not the same at all. Holding takes weight. Defending takes vigilance, and vigilance is exhausting, and it is why you are tired in a way that two years of quiet should not have made you.

And the thing you believe is standing up fine tonight without your guarding, because it was true a long time before you ever heard it. Scripture never once makes truth depend on the person holding it, and His Spirit is well able to keep something alive that has survived considerably worse than a family argument.

A man walked out of a colony in the winter, four hundred years ago, because he would not say what they told him to say. People who owed him nothing gave him ground, and on it he built a place where the men he was most certain were wrong could live unmolested. He argued with some of them in public for days at a stretch, at the top of his voice, in his old age.

He never once tried to have any of them removed.

That is not a standard being hung over you. It is a door being pointed at, and it is the same door you have.

The latch is on the inside

Notice what he did not do. He did not soften. He did not decide the disagreement was small, and he did not conclude that everybody was somehow right. He argued as hard as a man can argue.

He simply never reached for the latch.

And nothing in you has to bend for that latch to come off, because leaving a door unlocked is not a concession and was never an opinion. The word puts hearing and conviction in the same sentence without any strain at all, and the Spirit who gave you what you believe is the same one who keeps the door of a settled person unlocked.

The one who has to hold the door shut is the one who is not sure it would survive being opened.

The breakthrough

Here is what is being handed back to you tonight, and it is not an instruction about your phone. I do not know your family, and I am not going to tell you what to do with an account.

It is the weight.

You have been carrying your conviction the way a person carries something they are afraid of dropping. Two hands, up high, eyes on it. That is not how you carry something you actually own. That is how you carry something on loan.

And what you believe is yours, at full weight, tonight, and it does not get lighter in a room where somebody disagrees. The written word settles that and never once makes a person's certainty depend on the agreement in the room, and His Spirit does the keeping so that your grip is not the thing the truth is standing on.

Put it down onto your shoulder. Then notice that both hands are free.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Wall I hung with three rugs, you muted a whole lane for two years and you were never meant to keep my conviction in. Scripture puts the speed on the hearing and the brake on the mouth, so tonight I hold what I believe at its full weight with nothing hung over it.
  2. Fear that listening is half agreeing, you are put out of this house in the name of Jesus. You have had me guarding a thing that was true long before I ever heard of it, and it is standing up fine tonight with my hands off it.
  3. Lord, I can hold what I believe with my whole weight and still leave the door unlatched. You are swift to hear me every single time I open my mouth and You have never once agreed with everything I said, and tonight I am sitting through one conversation without correcting anybody.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
