Your Own VoiceHebrews 4:16

The Prayer You Keep Forwarding

This message is for the prayer you have typed out and sent to somebody better at praying, four hundred times, because you stopped believing your own voice was the kind God answers

The kettle had boiled twice and she had not made anything with it.

Twenty past two in the morning, the hall light on, her phone face up on the table with a message half typed into it. Can you pray about, and then the cursor, blinking, for eleven minutes.

She has sent some version of that message four hundred times in nineteen years. Two doors down there is a woman who prays the way a window opens: unhurried, whole sentences, the right words in the right order, which is not how they arrive for her. And she always answers, and has never once made anybody feel small for asking.

But the lamp is off two doors down, there is a shift at six, and the thing on this table will not keep till morning.

She sat with her thumb over the screen and found out what was actually wrong, which was not the hour. It was never the hour. She has not said anything to God in her own voice since she was twenty six, and somewhere in all that forwarding she had come to believe her voice was not the kind He answers.

The kettle ticked as it cooled. Rain moved across the window.

And she said it out loud, badly, into a kitchen with the hall light on.

"God. It is me. It is the middle of the night and I do not know how to do this anymore. It is about my son."

Nothing in the room recoiled.

She had braced for a ceiling and got something else: the sense of being turned toward, the way somebody in a crowded room turns when you say their name. She sat very still, in case it went away.

It did not go away.

Now. You have a woman two doors down.

She might be your mother, a small group leader, a friend who prays with the ease of somebody stretching. You send her the thing. She carries it beautifully, and the relief that lands when the message shows delivered is real. Something happens when another believer takes your burden to God, and you were never wrong to want it.

She is not the villain of this, and the shame is going to reach for her, so hold on to that. She never took your voice. You handed it over gladly, in a season when you had nothing else to hand anybody, and nobody told you it was yours to ask back.

But you know the shape of what is missing. There is a difference between being prayed for and being on speaking terms, and you have been standing in a hallway for years with somebody else's hand on the door.

The Prayer You Keep Forwarding

Boldly is not a volume

There is one sentence about this, and it is not addressed to the fluent.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.Hebrews 4:16

Read who is invited. Us. Not the articulate among us, not the woman two doors down on behalf of the street. The invitation is to come, which is a thing a person does with their own feet.

And the word underneath boldly is not about volume. In the world that letter was written into, it was the word for a citizen's right to stand up in the assembly and say his own sentence, in his own accent, and have it count as speech. Not confidence. Standing. The freedom of somebody who belongs in the room.

You have the freedom of that room right now, in the accent you actually have, and it is not a thing you are working up to. It was bought and handed over, it stands written in Hebrews 4:16 as settled, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lays an ancient sentence on a kitchen table at twenty past two.

Look at the verse just above it, because this is where the whole thing rests. Seeing then that we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. You have someone who speaks for you. He is not asleep two doors down. He has no shift at six. He has never once been unavailable at twenty past two.

Then Paul, writing to people who had no idea what to say, sets the other end in place.

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness. We do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.Romans 8:26

So both ends of your praying are held by God Himself. Christ above you at the throne, already speaking. The Holy Spirit inside you, carrying what you cannot get into words. What is left in the middle is the only part that was ever yours: one plain sentence, and it does not have to be good.

You are not the weak link in your own prayer life. There is no weak link. There is a great High Priest, a Helper, and a person with a mouth, and Romans 8:26 says plainly that the Spirit goes to work at the exact place where the words run out.

Hear what I am not saying. Do not stop asking her. Paul asked constantly: pray for me, he wrote, and wrote it again, to church after church. Nobody in Scripture is ever weaned off the prayers of other people, and a body that carries one another to God is not a crutch, it is the design. Keep her. Thank her. Ask her tomorrow. The word that changes is small. You stop only asking her.

Let me name the thing you have not said out loud. The reason you have not prayed in your own words is not laziness. It is that if you say it plainly and nothing moves, you will have found out something you would rather not know. Underneath the forwarding sits a suspicion you have never let finish its sentence: that He listens to her, and merely tolerates you. Sent through somebody whose prayers seem to work, a silence stays hers. Kept in your own mouth, a silence is yours. The Holy Spirit is not embarrassed by that sentence, and what is written answers it.

This is the exact place where a hurting person gets blamed, and I will not do that to you. Nothing about the way you pray has ever been the reason anything did or did not move. The burden of bringing a person in front of God belongs to those of us who minister, never to you.

You are not being auditioned. You are in Christ, with all the standing that comes with His name, and the Word does not say come impressively, it says come boldly, and the Holy Spirit who lives in you is not marking the sentence He is helping you say.

Look at what actually got written down. Peter, going under with the wind in his face, managed three words: Lord, save me. That is the whole prayer. A tax collector who would not lift his eyes managed seven: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. A man dying beside Jesus, with no religious vocabulary and an hour left, said: Jesus, remember me. Not one of them was fluent. Every one of them was heard.

Plain is not lesser. Plain is close. The people who love you call something short from the next room, and nobody mistakes it for disrespect.

You have a voice He already knows, and He has never once asked to have you translated. Hebrews 4:15 says you have a great High Priest touched with the feeling of your weakness, and the Holy Spirit is saying it into you with more warmth than I can get onto a page.

The breakthrough

So do not forward this one. Not her, not forever. Just this one. Keep it, and carry it in yourself.

The door you are carrying it through was opened from the inside a long time ago, and nobody stands at it deciding whether your wording qualifies. There is a throne, and it is called the throne of grace, which is a strange name for a courtroom and the right name for a room where nobody arrives on merit.

You have your own access and your own voice. It was bought for you, it is written into Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it out of theory and into your kitchen.

Say it badly. Say it out loud. However He answers, and He answers as He chooses, He is not answering a stranger.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice, and do not smooth them out. You are not borrowing anybody else's standing: in Christ the access is yours, bought and handed over, and Hebrews 4:16 says come. Speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because however He answers, He answers as He chooses and never as a stranger to you. Scripture said these over you first, and the Holy Spirit carries them off the page and into your mouth.

  1. Message half typed at twenty past two, you are not my way in, and you never were the door. The Word of God says come boldly to the throne of grace, and boldly is the old word for a citizen's right to stand in the assembly and be heard in a voice of his own. The throne has no waiting area for people who are not good with words, and I am walking past the place where I have stood for years.
  2. Suspicion that He tolerates me, you are out of my house in the name of Jesus. Jesus is my great High Priest, touched with the feeling of my weakness, and He has never once asked to have me translated. I am on speaking terms with the God who knows the sound of me.
  3. Lord, You are not waiting for a better sentence, You are waiting for me, and Your word says I may come boldly and find grace to help in time of need. I am coming now in my own plain words, out loud, and I am not sending anybody in ahead of me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
