The whole thing took about twelve seconds and it was eleven years ago.
Gilbert Nakoa, who everybody calls Gib, had stayed back after a working bee to help load the green waste. He is fifty eight now and he was forty seven then, and there is not a small motor on this island he cannot bring back from the dead. Mowers, weed eaters, outboards, a generator once that two other men had already given up on. He does it in his carport and he does not talk about it.
So he said it to the woman with the clipboard, on the way to his truck, in the plainest way a man can say a thing.
"If the mower ever gives you trouble, I do that."
And she looked up and smiled at him and said, "Oh Gib, that is so good of you. I think Danny has it covered, but I will keep you in mind."
That is the whole story. That is all that happened.
She was kind. She was completely kind, she meant it, and she was also correct, because Danny did have it covered and Danny still has it covered. There is no version of this where she did anything wrong, and she almost certainly does not remember saying it.
Gib has never offered again.
Not once in eleven years. He still comes. Fourth row on the left, twice most months and more in summer when the grandkids are around. He shakes hands, he knows names, he stacks a chair on his way past if the chairs are out.
And every single time something comes up where he could say it again, and there have been maybe thirty of those, there is a thing that happens in his chest about a half second before he opens his mouth, and he does not open his mouth.
Then a Saturday in July.
He came early because his granddaughter had a thing in the hall at nine. It had rained hard in the night, and the low end of the parking lot where the ramp comes down had three inches of standing water across it, all the way to the door.
And at the top of the ramp there was Auntie Pua, ninety one years old, with her walker, looking at it.
Gib did not offer.
That is the part. Nobody was standing there to offer to. He got the flat shovel and the sheet of ply he keeps in the truck bed for the dog, and he went down on one knee in the wet and dug out the drain grate at the corner, packed solid with plumeria leaves and gravel since who knows when. When it went, it went all at once, and the whole low end of that lot drained in four minutes with a noise like a bathtub.
He laid the ply over the last wet stretch. He stood back and looked at it. Then he went up and held the door open, and Auntie Pua came across the ply with her walker and told him he was a good boy, which is a thing you never stop being at ninety one.
He was eleven minutes late for his granddaughter.
He told nobody. There was nobody to tell; the water was gone, and the twenty families who came in after him never knew there had been anything there at all.
And driving home he had to pull over by the cemetery wall, because his hands were shaking, and he sat there a while and could not have told you what was happening to him.

Given to every man
Paul is writing to a church that had turned its gifts into a ranking, and in the middle of straightening that out he drops one sentence that settles everything.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.1 Corinthians 12:7
Given. Past tense. Already done.
Every man. Not the ones the room found a slot for. Every.
To profit withal, which in plainer English is for the good of everybody. The purpose is built into the gift the way the edge is built into a blade. It is not something the gift acquires later when a list confirms it.
Now hold two documents next to each other, because this is the whole thing.
So take this off the shelf and put it on: what God put in you was put in you already, and it was put in you for the good of the people you sit down among. That is not my encouragement to a discouraged man. It is written, and the One who did the dividing is named four verses later as the Spirit Himself, dividing to every man severally as he will. The assignment was made by a Person, not by an oversight.
There is a list. Every gathering has one, on a clipboard or a spreadsheet or in somebody's head. And the list is good. A room with fifty jobs and no list is a room where the same three people quietly do everything and burn out by March. Nobody here has a word to say against it or against the people who keep it, and the woman with the clipboard was doing her job well.
But a list organizes work. It was never the register of what God put in a person, it never claimed to be, and nobody has ever written that document down.
The Spirit's register has your name on it, and it has had your name on it since long before that parking lot. The word says God hath set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him, and set means placed, on purpose, by a decision. The Holy Spirit does not put a thing in a man and then wait for a committee to ratify it.
Now the tender part, because a person can hear all of that and still not be able to get up.
You did not do anything wrong when you offered, and you did not do anything wrong when you stopped. Eleven years of not offering again is not a defect in you. It is what a person does when one attempt cost more than they had budgeted for, and you have been carrying that quietly and blaming yourself for it, and I want that put down. Scripture says a bruised reed shall he not break, and He never once has, and the Spirit of God has been keeping something alive in you for eleven years that you had privately written off.
Because here is the thing about the sentence that got you.
I will keep you in mind leaves the door open, which means there is no door to grieve, and you cannot mourn a no you never received. So it goes down inside a person unresolved, and instead of grief you get a slow quiet conclusion that arrives without ever being decided: that you are a spare seat, and the morning would run exactly the same without you.
That conclusion is not true and it never was, and it has no authority over you. The word says the members should have the same care one for another, and it puts your name inside that word members without asking anybody's permission. And the Holy Spirit who has kept you coming back to the fourth row for eleven years was never keeping a spare seat warm. He was keeping a man in a room where He fully intends to use him.
Now let me stop saying he, because the man at the cemetery wall with his hands shaking is you.
You know the half second in your chest before you would have spoken. You know the thirty times, and the strange loneliness of being genuinely welcome somewhere and still going home with the whole of yourself unopened.
And what you are carrying is needed there. Not tolerated, not eventually, needed. That is the word God chose for it: to profit withal, for the good of all. And the Spirit who apportioned it is the same One who has been building the ache in you, because an ache like that is not the absence of a calling. It is the pressure of one.
One unasked thing, this week, and you tell nobody.
Not an offer. You made your offer, and you made it well. Nothing here tells you to put your name on anything, and nothing here tells you that you are owed a position. Something small, that you can see needs doing, that nobody has asked for, that you already know how to do.
Do it, and do not tell a soul.
It is yours now, that place among them. Not pending, not spare, not conditional on somebody remembering your name in a parking lot. Yours. The written word says He set the members every one of them in the body as it pleased Him, and pleased is the word God used, so your being there was somebody's delight before it was ever anybody's oversight. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes a hidden thing count, and He has never needed a witness.
And when your hands shake afterward, do not be alarmed. That happens when a thing that has been folded up for eleven years opens.
Declare this over yourself
Your standing is Christ's standing delegated to you, and you speak as His ambassador and never as the owner of anybody else's conscience. Keep these words under "not my will, but Thine." God remains sovereign over every room and every answer, and His written word remains settled beneath your feet.
- Twelve seconds by a sign-up sheet, you were kind and you were never the register of what God put in me. The Word of God says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every one of us to profit with, and in the name of Jesus I am one of the every.
- Story I have told myself since that morning, you are out of my chest in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, You divided to every man severally as You would, and what You put in my hands You put there for this room.
- Lord Jesus, I am not an attender of this body, I am part of it, and You are the One who set me in it. I am doing one unasked thing this week and telling nobody, and You put what I am carrying into my hands long before anybody drew up a list.
